Food for the festival

The strangest thing is most festivals around the world are celebrated with something sweet. It seems like sweet finger food, sweets or desserts are always associated with a celebratory occasion. I wonder why. Perhaps, consuming something sweet sends a signal to our brains that allows us to feel exhilaterated whereas other senses of taste (spicy, sour, bitter) don't have the same effect on our brains? I don't know, it's just a wild guess.
