oxygen in a day (1) DAY AND her respirations are 60 how dangerous is that?

changing from 50% to 40% is not a big change and shouldnt increase her respiratory rate to 60. There must be something else causing it and hopefully the nurse will keep an eye on it and tell the doctor if it persists.

Not dangerous at all. It depends on her condition and what happens when they review her.

In SICU there will be a nurse sitting at the foot of her bed looking at her machine settings and numbers constantly ... charting them hourly for the doctors.

I have weaned someone from 100% O2 to nasal prongs over the course of 2 hours.

Her respirations of 60 are very high and they indicate that she is working hard to breathe.

I am sure they will be keeping track of her blood gas (the partial pressure of O2 in her blood) which is a better measure of how much O2 she is getting.

The main issue is one of review. If they are reducing her oxygen and not looking at her again, then she is in trouble. I think you will find that the doctors will be looking at her a couple of times during the day and then also every time the nurse thinks she needs review.

It's good that they are slowly weaning down the amount of O2 your mom is on. I am sure that they are watching her oxygen saturations closely (they should stay above 90%.) I am concerned about how fast she is breathing though. 60 resp/min is extremely fast - that is one breath every second. Normal respirations should be 12-20/minute. Are you sure it is 60 and not 16. Otherwise your mom would be huffing and puffing and likely they would have to increase the amount of O2 she is getting to slow her respirations down.

It does look like she is improving. Its not good but its not horrible either. As long as you notice that the percentage of oxygen they are giving her is lowering it means her body is compensating more and more, a sign of improvement. I hope she gets well soon.
