i think because thiazides have a milder effect than loop diuretics , they start with it first with k sparing diuretics, if the case is severe then they try loop diuretics. any how these category of drugs aren't OTC drugs they should be prescribed by a doc. who will know well the case.

Because loop diuretics are short acting ad have to be taken 3 times daily while thiazide only once daily.

With the present array of antihypertensive drugs, diuretics in the absence of heart failure only make K a problem. Do not use them.

Use potassium-sparing diuretics instead because they treat hypertension and hypokalemia at the same time.
