While living in China, I've never had/heard General Tsao's chicken.
But here is a recipe similar to it, and most people love it when I make it.

Take six big spoonfuls of orange marmalade, put it in a small bowl and heat it in the microwave for about 30 sec. until it melts.
To the marmalade, add four spoonfuls of soy sauce, one spoonful of sesame oil, a drop of hot sauce or so if you like hot flavor. Mix well.
Cut chicken breast or boned chicken legs in small pieces, dip in flour and fry it for about two minutes.
In a wok or saucepan, put in the prepared sauce, fried chicken, and about half cup of water. in very low heat, make sure you coat each piece well, heat for about three to five more minutes or until sauce thickens and bubblely.

It's not the receipe. It's the wok and the hot fire under the wok. Maybe that's why restaurant food always taste better.
