Yes, it is easier to let lose and have fun when a few people are around because they are probably your close friends. With a few people it is easier to make everyone happy and cater to everyone's needs.

Absolutely. A smaller number of people allows for more in-depth and engaging conversation; the party has a much more intimate and feeling.
I also like larger parties and just being one-on-one with people, too. It all depends on my mood and what I am hoping for (i.e. wanting to just people watch or dance or just observe... vs having more intimate conversation and time with a couple of people or just one other person).
