It may depend upon where you live. Here in California, we have the Winchester Mystery House close, so we did my daughters 8th birthday there. She was a tour guide for a day, very cool. Check any local landmarks, they may have birthday packages available.

My cousin uses a site called Evite.com It has all these great ideas for parties. She had a birthday party and her theme was "A night in Hell". She sent invitations through Email that said, "Go To Hell With Us" on the front, and the inside, where all the details are, said "We're all going anyways, we might as well make a party out of it." It was hilarious.

Anyways, people click on the email, it takes you to evite.com. The site organizes all the stuff for you. There is a list where people say if they are coming or not. There is another area where the host says what items people need to bring. Then, as the guests say they will come, they pick something from the list, potato chips, lawn chairs, that kind of thing. Check it out...

There are all sorts of theme parties you could do. How about a Middle Eastern hafla? Basically all your friends get together and dance (maybe to Shakira?). Have lots of hummus and pita, good wine, baklava, and anything else like that. Tell everyone to wear something jingly or shiny if they have it!
Other theme ideas: costume party (always more fun when it isn't Halloween), toga party (lots of fun if you find pictures of Roman statues and ruins and hang them around--have lots of pillows to recline against. There are some interesting ancient Roman recipes on the internet as well), there are also parties where you and your pals get together at one house, have one part of a meal there (appetizers), move to another friend's house for another part of the meal (salad),and so on and so on. You could also do a scavenger hunt. Just be creative and have fun. Also, try to include as many people in the planning as you can....it gets stressful for one person to do something.

There are so many ideas that my head is spinning. I love birthday parties and have attended many, gee I'm getting old. I have given these party themes; scavenger hunt, cowboys, pirates, mobsters, costumes, fancy hats, Barbie, G.I. Joe, Mexican (with pinatas), one color (pick a color), High Tea, princesses, trolls, animals, circus. These are a few of the parties that I have had for my children and myself. The ideas are only limited by your imagination so get to thinking and then find decorations, foods, and a cake that will set it all off.

What about this could work for kids or adults, to have a pirate themed party. Where everyone could dress up and it is kinda easy just throw something on. The menu is still very flexible too.

How about a 80's retro party or a bring your pet party (nice animals only). Or maybe a new watch party - everyone buy a watch and then trade with others by pulling names.

A scavenger hunt is soooooooooo fun....

I make up little notes with directions on them to the next note and head to town...putting them in all sorts of places and cooperating businesses...

I have my guests look for a hidden treasure giving them various directions and clues. Of course I don't make it REAL hard...I would like them to actually return before the evening is over...ha ha.

Another one I have done for hubby and our exchanges students is hide similar notes around the house with $1 by each note... They have to look anywhere from 20 to 50 places for their money to add up! At the END of the hunt they find their final gift. Then on to the cake and ice cream !!
