How much radiation is involved?
The injection of MIBI results in a radiation exposure to your body of 4.8 mSv (Sv is a unit of measurement for radiation exposure). In comparison, the amount of radiation you already receive from all naturally occurring sources ( food, water, etc.) is 3.0 mSv. The radiation you receive is not smelled, felt or seen nor does it make your clothing radioactive.
Are there any adverse reactions to MIBI?
You may briefly notice a metallic taste for a few seconds after the injection has occurred. Other side effects are very rare.
How long will MIBI stay in my body?
The MIBI decays and is naturally excreted from the body within 24 hours without leaving any trace or effect.
What is the risk of the test?
Everything we do, including stress testing, carries some risk. The chance of a serious event (heart attack or death) occurring as the result of this study is approximately 1-4 in 10,000. Your doctor is aware of these risks and feels the risks of not having the information from this study exceed the risks of the test. If you have any questions please contact your doctor. Further concerns can be discussed with the doctor at the time of the test.

Nuclear imaging stress tests are very safe. The estimated risk of complications are only about 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 2,000 cases. These complications involve rare skin rashes, large fluctuations in blood pressure, arrhythmias, and difficulty breathing or asthma-like reactions. These, and any additional risks that may apply specifically to you, will be explained to you in advance by your doctor and by the health care provider performing the test.
Radiation exposure to radiotracers can be a concern for the nuclear lab staff, but not for patients undergoing an occasional nuclear imaging test.

There is no more of a risk than shaving your legs, under arms, etc. Do realize that this is an especially sensitive area so take extra caution while shaving. The tissue in that area is particularly thin and a nick in that area is more prone to severe pain and/or infection. Be careful :)
