Usually a person will get an STD through some sort of sexual contact with someone who has the STD. There are people out there though who have STDs and have never had any kind of sexual contact with anyone.

People can get HIV through sharing dirty needles with some else who has HIV or through a blood transfusion (although this is less common today because of the screening of the blood).

There are also many STDs that a person can be born with. Certain STDs have a greater chance of being passed from the mother to child of course. HIV, herpes, HPV, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and syphilis can all be passed down through birth if the mother has any of these. Of course some are really rare to be passed down this way, but it can happen.

You can also get certain STDs from sharing towels, cups, utensils, etc. Cold sores (herpes simplex virus one) is usually transmitted through simply kissing someone else who has cold sores. You can also get it from sharing a drink with them, sharing chap stick, lipstick, even cigarettes with someone who has cold sores. Crabs (pubic lice) can be spread by skin-to-skin contact, or in clothing, bedding, or on a toilet seat harboring the insects (rare).

Also, some STDs can be spread by just direct skin to skin contact, no sex involved. Herpes, HPV, and crabs can all be spread by just skin to skin contact with a person who has it.

If you are sure neither of you has been with anyone you probably won't get a disease. Only if they have been infected unknowingly with HIV by some other means (such as drug use via shared needles or other blood contamination) you could be in serious danger. Whether you believe it or not that someone has not been with anyone else you better get tested afterward if you are going to take a stupid risk and have unprotected sex.

Yes it is possible, my friend got it after ten years with the same boyfriend, and she got it HPV and CIN 1, the doctor said that she probably got it because of the weak immune system, under wear which is not comfortable, toilet seat or etc.
So the only suggestion is to keep your immune system strong and be careful with your hygienic habits.

well it depends on the type of the disease. If it's aids, you can even get that from a cut or needles that are shared.
