If it is cooked, its not raw. Sounds simple right? Perhaps these people you speakl of have soaked the beans overnight and that is how they make their hummus. I know you can make things like that out of almonds by soaking them overnight. Good luck on your wieght loss and enjoy the raw foods!

To lose weight, a person has to reduce the calorie intake by some amount by modifying their diet. A diet without sufficient nutrients will only increase the appetite of the person trying to lose weight. Since most people combine a diet with an exercise plan, additional nutrients are required for the growth of muscles required to increase the metabolic rate required for long term weight loss. The beans are soaked for a number of hours in order to soften and increase in size. They are then boiled until cooked. These are then mashed, it is made with tahini paste made from ground sesame seeds. It is a major ingredient in hummus. Afterwards it is decorated with tomatoes and is used as a dip for grilled meats.Tahini, or more accurately tahinia, is an Arabic word, the root word is tahn which means grind. The Arabic word for flour, taheen, also comes from this root word.

Yes, hommus is technically cooked food. My aunt is a total raw foodie - only fruits and veggies, but she caves when it comes to hommus. Sometimes she makes it herself but it is never as good as when she gets it from a restaurant. It is her one allowance.

Prepared hummus is made from cooked chickpeas(garbanzos). I imagine you can sprout the chickpeas and make hummus from the sprouts. This is something to google, as I don't have the experience to advise. The stuff you buy at the grocery store has cooked chickpeas, though.
