Everyone that I know seems to be eating porridge an awful lot lately, and this is certainly a new trend. I'm not very keen on the stuff - so I was just wondering if anyone could help me understand why it's becoming more and more popular? Thanks in advance :)

It's very inexpensive, quick to make, and nutritious - what's not to like? I've eaten all kinds of hot cereals much more ever since I got a microwave, as I like it thick, and cooking it in a pot made such a mess. Now I just cook what I want right in the bowl, and it's fast and easy, with no extra cleanup.

For the idiot American: this is an INTERNATIONAL site, open to anyone who writes/reads English. That includes a lot of countries in addition to the USA! Porridge is cooked hot cereal, such as oatmeal, wheatena, etc. If you don't know the meaning of a word, try using a dictionary.

i agree with copperyclover - it's because of the GI diet thing that's popular at the moment. there always has to be some miracle trendy diet that everyone has to do, like the Atkins diet which lasted a few months before people realised it was a load of rubbish. People have been eating porridge for centuries, then all of a sudden it's fashionable and everyone thinks it's a new thing for some reason. I love porridge, but it leaves me starving hungry after about a hour because it fills me up too quickly so I can't eat loads, and goes through my system too fast.

The best porridge is made with medium ground oatmeal, and only cooked for a minute or two so it retains some texture.
If you make it with rolled oats and it is just a slimy gruel.
I like to make it with stock rather than water or milk, but that is because I don't like sweet things, a finishing touch of a teaspoonful of cream and a sprinkling of chopped parsley also adds interest.

The revival in eating it is a response to Jamie Oliver's School dinners campaign - everyone is frightened that he will start on the rest of the nation soon and found the "Breakfast Police!"

I don't agree that it is a new trend; I have eaten some kind of porridge all my life. As far as I know, most of Europe has lived on porridge for centuries.
The popularity is that it is wholesome, healthy, low fat, high in fiber, and will keep you alive for decades. Eat a lot of porridge, fresh fruit, and few fats you may be slender and old. May the Glorious Maker bless you this day and for ever.

Well I don't know which part of the world you are from but from what I know here in Singapore, porridge is a popular food among us because it is a filling food is not as heavy as eating a rice or noodle meal. Since it's more watery at times, it is easier to digest and such. Eating wise, it saves time because one can quickly eat it and move on to do some other productive stuffs (provided it's not boiling hot!). Haha.

I cannot BELIEVE people haven't heard of porridge! It's actually rolled oats. Great for children especially on cold winter mornings.

You take 1 cup of oats with 2 1/2 cups milk or water (or milk & water), and a pinch salt, bring to boil and simmer for five minutes. Serve in a bowl with sugar or syrup. Add extra milk if desired. Lovely, hot and filling.

Ive been eating porridge since i was a kiddo. Not heard of a craze as such here......though then again i did miss the whole tamagotchi and yo yo incidents of the late nineties.

For the longest time I was really big into it, and then my husband and I went out for breakfast one Sunday, and they burnt it! It tasted like burning rubber - it was absolutely disgusting. Since then, I haven't touched the stuff. All it takes is that one time.....bleech!! But I hear you, it is very popular right now.

I'm a veg and i dont like porridge. It taste like ****. Plus, i wouldn't know non of my veg/friends eat it so maybe it's just where you live.
