starve a fever -- whenever a person has an infection, the person's temperature rise in an attempt to kill the bacterial infection (or in some cases, viral). it is the body's response to fight something that is not supposed to be inside the body. however, when the person is having an infection, the person's digestive system usually slows down because the person's body is conserving his/her energy to fight the infection.

i would say to not really starve a person with fever, but put him/her on a soft diet.. like soup or noodles instead of anything with meat and/or dairy. usually what happens is, if they ate a heavy meal, they just might throw it all up. -- based on my own personal experiences, and experiences of other people.

there's nothing really wrong with eating when sick, you need to eat because you need the energy. it's just that you have to be a little careful when you have a fever... a doctor would probably prescribe some anti-biotics, tell you to eat a soft diet and would advise bed rest.

It is feed a cold, starve a fever. But it is about solid foods, not fluids. With a fever, if you eat solids, you may cause yourself to vomit. Such things as milk products will "curddle" in the stomach, sour and cause you to vomit. Thus the saying "starve a fever." Taking EXTRA fluids is a MUST during a fever because you are losing fluid right and left. CLEAR water and juices, broths are great. Avoid pulpy things like OJ and tomato juice, and NO milk products. Avoid coffee and tea, they will dehydrate you. With a cold, you have to kinda MAKE a person eat. Colds last for days....fevers for only hours usually.

The second one is the saying but it is not correct. You should drink plenty of fluids for either condition. Take lots of vitamin C in the form of citrus fruits and tomatoes.
