It's not illegal to kill your own chickens, but there may be restrictions on where it can be done. Check with your local ASPCA or police dept.

no illegal unless they were treating the chickens cruelly (more cruel then killing and boiling to get the feathers off) If you think that is bad you should find out how most meat packing plants do it. I would say you are probably wasting your time going to the authorities, but you could have some PETA members drive by and throw some blood on their door. Or maybe you could liberate the chickens and set them free.... in the wild... or something.

You may have better luck calling your local Health Department or Humane Society than the police or other agency. Killing chickens in the middle of the city without some kind of permit doesn't sound very healthy or legal. And the Humane Society may decide that it's cruelty to animals and get involved.

But if they were Hmong, could that possibly have been some kind of healing ritual? I know that their healers do sacrifice animals for various purposes, but I'm not sure that chickens are among them. If so, they may be able to claim freedom of religious expression and be able to keep on.

I used to help kill chickens for food on my grandparents' farm, and we sure didn't make the animal suffer like that. I'm sorry you had to watch it.

If they are eating the chickens, the police won't do anything. If they are doing satanic rituals, maybe you could, although wouldn't that be freedom of religion? This is how meat gets to the table in the real world. The stuff at the grocery store is killed in a more barbaric and inhumane fashion and arrives neatly shrink wrapped so the consumer remains clueless. Welcome to the world. Go veg!

You have a better chance that there is an ordinance against live chickens in the city. There are a lot of places limiting farm animals, so you might stop it that way.

In some cities it's illegal to butcher without a license...but it probably isn't illegal cause it was for their own consumption and not for resale. Call City Hall and ask is the best you can do. (this is pretty much a local ordnance question...goes town by town).

Is it illegal to kill animals raised for food?

Of course not.

Now - if those chickens did not belong to them, there would be an issue.

I doubt if it's illegal.....in many European cities you go to the market, buy your chicken and then kill it and defeather it like your neighbors did.....just don't go naming it when you get it.

Kinda puts you off thinking about KFC for supper, don't it?
