It all depends on the content of a specific persons diet.

Vegetarians and vegans can be very unhealthy and overweight if they consume a diet that is high in fat, salt and processed foods much that same as omnivores (meat & veggie eaters).

Since *most* people who eat meat also eat veggies; it is possible to be extremely healthy while consuming some meat.

The key is to focus ones diet primairily on unrefined whole foods and not to eat processed foods, refined flour, added fat, salt or sugar. Leafy greens and other green veggies have properties that are exceptionally good at preventing cancer. A wide variety of fruits and veggies is the cornerstone of any healthy person's diet; and occasionally eating lean meat, poultry, and fish isn't necessairily bad for a person.

I eat a whole foods vegan diet and am much healthier now than when I ate a vegetarian diet full of convenience foods (take out, frozen food, etc.). I choose to be vegetarian/vegan because I do not like eating meat; but I do not see an issue (at least where optimal health is concerned) in someone eating some meat as long as they don't neglect the fruits and veggies.

Quite the opposite. Vegetarians have lower rates of heart disease (the biggest killer) and several types of cancer. Not eating meats also means not eating all the hormones and antibiotics that are fed to meat animals, as well as greatly reducing cholesterol and saturated fat.

It is possible to eat a very poor vegetarian diet and be unhealthy as a consequence, but merely adding meat to a diet of pepsi and froot loops is not going to make it a healthy diet anyway! Most vegetarians eat a balanced diet of grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables that is very conducive to living a long and healthy life. And most vegetarians also avoid life-shortening habits like using illegal drugs. They are usually more energetic than meat eaters so get more exercise. All these things help vegetarians live productive and happy lives for an average of ten extra years!

Vegetarians live longer. Also the guy talking about protein doesn't know what he's talking about. Excessive protein consumption is directly tied to osteoporosis. A balanced diet is what is required. Aside from that, vegetarians live longer and have fewer problems with aging than meat eaters.

The studies showing vegetarians living longer are based on Seventh Day Adventist who also avoid alcohol and smoking. Most vegetarians are more aware of the relationship between diet and health and might be living longer because they are more likely to eat the proper amount of fruits and veggies and whole grains, avoid trans fats, etc. Statistically, vegetarians live longer.

No, statistics support the fact that vegetarians live longer. Diet itself isn't the sole reason; vegetarians are less likely to smoke, drink to excess, etc... which certainly contributes to their longevity.

No, however, vegetarians are going to have to find an alternative source of protein to supplement their diets to make up for the deficiency caused by not eating meat products.
