That's because when your arms are placed on top of your body while you are laying down they are above your heart and the blood flows out of the arms faster than the heart is able to get blood to flow back into them.
Hence the tingling from the poor circulation and the pins and needles when you lower your arms and the blood returns to them.
When you raise your arms over your head for a while when you are standing up the same thing happens.
Just get used to sleeping with your arms at your sides, if you sleep on your back, or sleep on your side.
Make sure to get a full physical check-up though to rule out heart problems, high blood pressure, etc. just to be on the safe side.

If you're lying on your arms, you could be cutting off the circulation. If the numbness goes away soon after you wake up, that's probably the cause...might be a message that it's time to lose some weight.
If there's nothing on your arms...they just get numb without any pressure points, you need to see a doctor soon.

That use to happen to me. It merely sounds like poor circulation. I use to put that cream for muscle aches(icy hot or something like that) on my arms to improve circulation. I only had to do it twice and arms never bothered me anymore. Also I had to cut down on coffee or switch to another brand. It kinda gave me the jitters and made my arms feel funny too.
