Which type, type 1 or type 2???

My late husband was type 1 and nobody else in his family was diabetic.

My sister in law is type 1, and nobody in her family was diabetic...however she married my brother, and their son is diabetic type 1.

There are shades of grey with type 1.

However, type 2 is a horse of another feather. Type 2 is a self-inflicted disease.

If you eat quite a lot, and exercise not at all, not only will you get fat, but your body loses it's ability to handle/absorb sugar....and there is a good chance that you will become a member of the diabetes type 2 club!

I had a friend who was diagnosed as type2, and was put on the diabetic pill. She took it, but she also started exercising and eating right. Within two years she was off the pill. She was warned not to go back to her old life style, but her sugars were wonderful naturally...and still are.

So, eat right and exercise your bod :)

There are 2 types of diabetes. Type 1 - or juvenile diabetes and Type 2 - or adult onset diabetes.

Type 2 is hereditary. It runs in families. What's happening to change that though, is that obese children are developing type 2 diabetes and it is not hereditary, it is due to their obesity.

Type 1 is not hereditary. It is usually caused by a deficient immune system in which the immune system actuallly attacks the pancreas.

It confusing actually....You hear on the News how Diabetes is on the increase because of bad diet, poor exercise, etc, yet I have diabetes type II myself and I went to and spoke to a specialist about it and she said that Diabetes has to run in families. My mother died of kidney failure....I suspect she had diabetes but was never diagnosed because she also suffered a stroke as well, all symptomatic of having diabetes.

I tend to believe that it does run in families, although I really havent researched it...I should really because it may end up killing me.

Yes it runs in the family. My mom has is, my aunt has it, and my grandmother had it. Diabetes is associated with your body not producing enough insulin.

I got this little tid bit off of the website on my source list:

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, physical inactivity, and race/ethnicity. African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and some Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at particularly high risk for type 2 diabetes.

Risk factors are less well defined for type 1 diabetes than for type 2 diabetes, but autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors are involved in developing this type of diabetes.

Gestational diabetes occurs more frequently in African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and people with a family history of diabetes than in other groups. Obesity is also associated with higher risk. Women who have had gestational diabetes are at increased risk for later developing type 2 diabetes. In some studies, nearly 40% of women with a history of gestational diabetes developed diabetes in the future.

Other specific types of diabetes, which may account for 1% to 2% of all diagnosed cases, result from specific genetic syndromes, surgery, drugs, malnutrition, infections, and other illnesses.

In my family my maternal grandfather had diabetes, they called it old age diabetes then, as did my fraternal grandfather and my father. So I think I probably had a real good chance. I also was overweight but here's the catcher I wasn't a sweet eater, tho I loved my carbs. I also have an ostomy and I think it may have had an impact as well.

Most of the time it's a very inherited disease. Several of the folks on my dad's side of the family had it, and I ended up being diagnosed with it. Just because your family members have it, however, doesn't mean you will! You just have to eat the right things, avoid eating too much sugar, exercise, stay in shape, and you should be fine!
