There are a number of reasons this would need to be done. if the tonsils became infected with a bacteria (acute tonsilitis) which is usually accompanied by a sore throat. Strep throat is a common reason (and can cause secondary damage to the heart valves and kidneys). It can also lead to a skin rash (scarlet fever), sinusitis, pneumonia, and ear infections.Repeated infections may cause the formation of small pockets in the tonsils which harbor bacteria.Obstruction to breathing by enlarged tonsils and adenoids may cause snoring and disturbed sleep patterns that may lead to sleep pauses or sleep apnea. Other features include frequent awakening from sleep, restless sleep, nightmares, bed wetting, mood changes, excessive sleepiness, failure to thrive, and even heart problems.Chronic enlargement and infection of the adenoids may lead to infection of the air passages around the nose (sinusitis) or nasal drainage/obstruction, and/or may affect the eustachian tube of the ear, leading to chronic ear infections.

Yes, it is usually done to children, however if an adult has had many throat infections or tonsillitis they may be removed to help control the inflammations of the throat.
Best to ask the doctor Why he is considering this procedure and get his reasons.

Usually the only reason for doing a tonsilectomy in an adult is, the tonsils are rotting or they are causing other health problems. In an adult it is almost always reactive whereas in a child it's proactive... just done in case of later problems.

A physician would not want to remove tonsils unless it were medically necessary. They don't remove them in children any more unless medically necessary. The reasons are disease, problems with breathing, things like that.

I've heard of adults having their tonsils out. Maybe you should just ask the doctor.

Well, if they weren't a problem when you were a child then why would the doctor remove them. They only do it when they become a problem. It's very comon in adults.
Ask your doctor about removing the adenoids at the same time. That will also help.

NO. haha. It is actually very dangerous for adults to get the proceedure done. There is a possibility in bleeding to death. I am not sure why, but me, being 16 wanted to get mine removed and my dentist said that would not be a good idea. Not only does it cost a lot if your insurance doesn't cover it (they don't cover it unless you have a problem with them such as they are so swollen that it is hard to breathe or swallow. If you have stones coming out of them I suggest gargling with warm salt water ever night, or drinking lots of fluids when you eat, lots of people have that problem, called crypts, but nothing can really be done about it). Hope I was helpful

i was 30 and i almost bled out,,,,i hemorrhaged 5 days post-op. i was never really in pain ,,but i couldn't swallow anything,,,my pills all sat in my throat and i could feel them for hours,,,come to find out i had a huge clot in my throat and it fianlly let loose. they ended up fixing my throat and he even cleaned out my stomach too as it was full of blood. honestly it was the WORST thing i ever did. i told the dr it was a good thing they didnt grow back,,,as i would NEVER let anyone do that to me again. i couldnt eat for almost 8 weeks,,,and then it was still soft/liquid food. the hardest thing i learned was bread it always got "caught". i lost about 25# (that wasnt so bad) but i would NEVER do it again. i would seriously be sure to find a VERY WELL QUALIFIED dr and be sure all is well before leaving the hospital.

Mine weren't taken out as a child and in order to alleviate my sleep apnea, they were taken out as an adult. It worked!
