I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian on moral grounds since I was 11-years-old. This is very very important and huge factor in making up who I am. Somehow, people never seem to understand. They give me funny looks like I'm nuts and MOST of them even say things like "I'm gonna make you the best steak ever" or "Here, want a bite of my hamburger?" except for the very few who comment on just how cool it really is. And I do think it's cool. It was an idea presented to an 11-year-old and something that wound up sticking throughout adolesence, teen years, and young adulthood. It is me! I really just want to know how to help others accept that other people having an opinion or lifestyle other than their own is not only NOT wrong, but right! That is, after all, what the world runs on...where would we be if we all looked, acted, and thought the same?!? C'mon, people!

James_L - hate to break it to you...but that food does exist! Lol. Veggie Burger, Morning Star farms, as well as others offer all sorts of meat-free alternatives. Winn Dixie's generic brand even jumped on the band wagon - the stuff must not be too bad, huh?!?

I guess it isn’t necessary for people to accept it, but rather quit pushing their beliefs onto me. After all, I do not do it to them! I don’t know how to “joke” about it. It’s not that kind of an issue. Neither the reason that I’m a vegetarian, nor the actual process of me being one is at all funny. Sorry. I wish it were so easy to shut up those that I “should not surround myself with” – family.

I'm curious how many more people would become veggie if they had to slaughter their own dinner. Some people seem to think meat comes from the grocery store. Just ignore them. If they say god put animals here for us to eat you can point out that factory farms did not exist then- animals got to roam free and have a good life until the end.

What you choose to eat or not eat is a personal decision and not something that people seem to react very well to. I have been vegetarian for many years and sometimes all I say is "no, thank you I'm vegetarian"..and they get very defensive with me! Yelling about how eating meat is nature's way, blahblah.
I've given up on any kind of speeches, I just eat the way I prefer to, and let others do the same, but still some people can get very "in your face" about it!

How about organizing a vegetaran potluck dinner to introduce those who don't understand your dietary choice to the delicious and healthy recipes that contain no meat-and in your case, no eggs or milk? You could furnish the main dish or dishes and others could bring fruit desserts or beverages.

Why is it necessary that people accept your life
choices? There is no way everyone is going to accept
something that is different. If you find their comments that bothersome then why tell people?
Ignore the comments and the looks. It is their issues not yours. " To thine own self be true."
Personally, I wouldn't give these people a second
thought. It would require too much effort.( and most people aren't worth it...lol)

if i was a vegetarian i would not care what other peoples beliefs were ..i would have the right to eat what i wanted when i wanted and that should only be my concern...i respect people more when they stand up for there beliefs......as i would not want a vegetarian running me down for eating meat...

I just refuse to surround myself with such shallow people. If I do meet someone and they make a comment like that, I honestly let them know that their stupid comment is unwarranted and I don't appreciate it. That usually shuts them up.

as a fellow vegetarian, who freakin cares what other people think, it really isnt that big of a deal, i mean if it really bothers you just make jokes about it, then they'll learn to accept it...or they wont, either way really makes no difference.

Remind them that the less meat you eat the cheaper it will be for them. Supply and demand.

Maybe you could invent food that tastes as good as a steak.
