My 5 year old recently was changed to the Advair diskus and has experienced some hyperactivity since the change and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Yes, listen to the respiratory therapist, and not the ones that encourage you to 1. self medicate or 2. doubt your doctor. Every situation is different, and your doctor actually knows your child and their specific circumstances. Of course, talk to your doctor about this, as they may have some suggestions or material for you to read about it.
It is very common for children to become hyper on respiratory meds. I have an 8 yr. old that began breathing treatments and inhalers when he was three due to complications from pneumonia and RSV. Oh, I really did not like to have to give him his "puffer" when we were getting ready to go some where, and at the time it was 2 nebulizer treatments a day and his inhaler every 4 hours! UGH bouncing off the walls. But now, 5 years later, his treatments are on an as needed basis, so the effects are not constant. Plus, usually he only needs one during strenuous exercise, so the effects aren't as noticeable. But, every now and then, he will need one while we are hanging out at home, and.....well, you know!!! :)
Hang in there!

I had a very strong atrial fibrillation requiring an emergency trip to the ER that started shortly after doing my morning Advair inhalation on the sixth day of using this medicine. Needless to say, I no longer use Advair.

I was told that atrial fibs were a known side effect and caused by the salmeterol portion of the Advair drug combo. Flovent has only the fluticasone proprionate portion of Advair and is safer as far as CNS side effects.

i'm on advair, but never have experienced hyperactivity. granted that i'm not 5 years old and this may have that effect on children. I do know that advair diskus is a form of a steriod so it is possible.

Not me, and I use Advair, but check with the Dr. or pharmacist. Usually Albuterol or Ventolin, or even Atrovent cause that side affect. Is your child on any other medication? If not it might be the Advair and you can let the Dr. know but they most likely won't discontinue use of it for that.

i did a little research on this becuase my friends daughter is on it and has become very hyper lately but it does not say anything in the side effects of this medicine that it could cause hyperness. Could be coincidence that she has ADHD at the same time that she is on Advair.

He's young.

Try giving him water when he has an asthma attack.

It's what I do, and I never use advair or an inhaler again.

Yes, it is not uncommon for children to become hyper after taking their respiratory meds.

Yes. Your heart rate speeds up is why. Also, anything with epinephrine in it, will speed up your heart rate.
