The white robe, or dishdasha, is the equivalent for Muslim men of the blue jeans for we Americans. They are simple and very comfortable. Even though I'm a woman, I've worn them at home since 1980. I love them.

Comfort. The white cotton is lightweight and breathes, and it also reflects most of the sunlight. Living in Southeast Texas I can understand why they do it. It a country like Saudi Arabia the temperature in the summer can reach over 115 degrees in the capital. This is typical throughout the Middle East. In a country like India the humidity and the heat is stifling. In Houston, we have a large Indian and Vietnamese population because our hot and humid climate is very similar to what these cultures are used to. This summer the heat index got as high as 110 degrees here. Trust me, air conditioning cannot function well at that humidity level and it is miserable, even for a veteran Southeast Texan like myself.

I always thought people who lived in the warmest climates should know how to dress best. White SEEMS cooler to me, but dark heavy cloth might give better protection from the sun's radiation. It would be interesting to know for sure.

because that is what they want to wear..send a letter to Mr bush to stop them from wearing there traditional clothes...what is wrong with America with too much interfere with other nation activities.Aha! i forgot you are the world police.please leave Muslims and everyone alone pleassssssssssssssssssssssss.

It's their traditional dress and it's comfortable and functional. It's what they choose to wear. Rather like you might choose to wear jeans and a tee-shirt.

in hot conditions ppl want cool clothes, and white is the coolest of all colours. so, to refrain from heat ppl wear these white colours.
