Everyone has yeasts that live on our skin. Some people have an adverse reaction to this yeast on the scalp, which leads to dandruff. The best known treatment is to regularly use a shampoo that contains the ingredient ketoconazole, which kills the yeast on the scalp. A common brand name is "Nizoral" shampoo. Use it daily for a week or so, then taper down to 2-3 times per week (alternating with a non-medicated shampoo). It really works for 98% of people.

If you truly have dandruff then it is smelly and you will need to see a doctor. Most people get dandruff and a dry scalp mixed up due to all the advertisements out there for dandruff shampoos. More people suffer from a dry scalp then they do from dandruff. Try the Paul Mitchel line of shampoos and conditioner and see if they help, assuming you have a dry scalp.

i used to always have dandruff so i told my mom and she bought a Head & Shoulders dandruff shampoo and it really did work. also for me, Pantene was HORRIBLE because it kept on drying out my hair so much. shampoos i like to use that don't dry my hair out are Fructis Garnier and Herbal Essences. by the way, i have straight hair if that matters.

I personally like T-Gel. Much stronger than H&S, but you will need lots of conditioner after using it. Also, don't use it all the time--alternate it with other shampoos.
