Dont you think it's for the sole purpose of testing them?
Dont you know there is another tree which fruit was supposed to be eaten first before that one?
How would they mature without testing? God wants them/us to be mature so that we become mature.

Think about it : The fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Adam and Eve already knew good, simply by merely obeying God and not eating the fruit. By giving them the opportunity to know evil would show "Hey, God, I love and obey you simply because I choose to... not because I have no other choice".
Think of it this way : Two couples sit at a restaurant. The first man (who is wealthy beyond measure) says to the first woman, "I love you, and we're going to get married, and you have no say so over it. Everything you need or want will be provided for you. You *have* to love and obey me". The second man (who is equally wealthy) says to the second woman, "I love you dearly. I will provide everything your heart could possibly desire. I will serve you faithfully until the day I die. I will do my very best to provide a good life for you. Everything I can possibly offer is yours. Will you marry me?".
Who, of the two men, is showing real love to their woman? The second one. By offering a choice, he's concerned about how she feels about him... not just about how he feels with no concern about her.
So too is it with God. He loves us so much, that He gave us the chance to not love Him in return. When we see how lonely and hard things are without Him, do we return and accept His offer.

God made us for one reason: so He could have fellowship with us. It wasn't that He was lonely or needed us—but He made us in His image so He could shower His love upon us, and we could love Him in return. The Bible says, "God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him" (1 John 4:16).
You are right, however: God knew we were going to abuse our freedom and turn our backs on Him—and when we did, suffering and death descended on us. Adam and Eve lived in the most perfect environment imaginable, and yet they listened to Satan's lies and rebelled against their Creator. We have been paying the price for their sin ever since.
But this didn't stop God's plan for the human race! He could have simply destroyed us—but because He loves us, He provided a way for us to come back to Himself. Even before the human race sinned, God knew what He would do: He would send His only Son into the world to become the sacrifice for our sins. The Bible says, "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world ... to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ" (Ephesians 1:4-5).
Have you come back to God by giving yourself to Jesus Christ? Don't spend your life wandering away from Him, but discover the joy of having fellowship with Him every day. By a simple prayer of faith ask Christ to come into your life, take away your sins and make you His child forever.

Because He is God and He desired to do it.
Why do teachers give tests in school? To find out how the students have been listening and learning.
Why did God give man a test? For the same reason.
Man flunked.

Would you let children eat absolutely anything you have in your house?
Or are there some things you have in your house for good reasons of your own, but which you tell children not to touch?
It's all just very basic common sense and good parenting; we don't rearrange the house to suit the kids, we arrange the house to suit ourselves and teach the kids what they can and can't do inside it.
Simple really, innit?

To test their faith in God! Adam listened, Eve didn't. That is why us women bare children. Hope this helped.

That was Lucifers argument too. That he lost his arms and legs to Gods anger makes me glad that God also learns from his encounters with us. Can you imagine what the world would be like if all those who made God angry became snakes?

Bcos God does'nt want mindless robots to serve him, he makes sure we want to by providing an alternative...called free will. Be thankful for that gift (or maybe not- then you would'nt ask such questions)

You've already gotten some really great answers.
Look at it from the angle of evolution...an organism needs to be challenged if it is to develop....
