I am living my life without my family - I mean my married brothers and their families. My parents passed away. I live in another country. I keep in touch by phone and e-mail.
Yes, it can be lonely around holiday times - but I am with my friends during holidays. Actually, I miss my parents (mother especially) more than my brothers.
I don't think friends are a substitute for family, but friends are very important and you can be very close with friends as well.
I think since I made my decision to live in another country that means living my own life is more important to me than being near my family.

You could look at this 2 ways.
They say that sadly you can't choose your family but that depends on your current family life.
I think I'd be lost without some key members of my family but others not so.

Look at some of the current stars e.g. Tiger Woods and Sharapova. You will find that they have very supportive families. Families are your lifelines. It is tragic when someone - for whatever the reason - looses this.

Life is worth living with or without my family.
A precious gift I would like to keep and dare not to trade
