It will only work if there are light tangles. You spray it on and gently pick out the tangle, usually if you start from the bottom of the tangle and work your way up.
Not all detanglers work and they do not work on someones hair that is really tangled. Some people believe fully that if you put conditioner instead of a detangler, it works just as well. I tried that on a patients hair at my job, and it really didn't work. There are some detanglers that actually do work. Best of luck to you.

Added wax or synthetic polymers allow the hair to become slick or smooth so knots slide apart easier.
