It is usually cheaper to fly on a Tuesday for some reason.

I don't know where you are, but if you check with any air carriers that go to your nearest airport, you can often find deals. I go directly to the airlines website. I have used USAIRWAYS and Southwest. If Southwest goes to your airport, you can download "DING" program and they will notify you when any 'specials' are available.

Check prices now and keep track of them (Kayak.com offers a history of air fares). Likely the best time will be between 6 and 3 weeks before departures. I don't know why, but Tuesdays and Wednesday are the best times to BOOK. Sunday nights are the worst.

August and September can still be really expensive, but September would probably be a bit cheaper, but it also depends on where you're flying to.
