sweets as said above are not good for children or adults for reasons like obesity and tooth decay. The obesity can lead to diabetes in some cases. Soda is also bad because there is something in it that causes bone mass depletion. It would take twice as much calcium for the amount of soda someone drinks to replace the bone mass that is loss. My mother who is a nurse of 25 years told me this about soda after much research. hope this helps.

Probably the biggest concern would be the damage to their teeth from all the sugar. Next would be the fact that, by filling their tummies with sweets, they won't be hungry for the nutritious foods they NEED to eat. And finally, your sanity may be at stake, with the sugar rush making them run around like chickens with their heads cut off!
As far as cutting back goes....you're the PARENT, and the person who BUYS THE GROCERIES, sweetheart! If you don't bring the junk food home, they can't eat it! Simple as that! Be prepared for much wailing and gnashing of teeth if you've let them get away with eating too much candy up until now; but you may be able to counteract some of it by having nutritious snacks readily available for them; my 4-year old son loves the fact that we have a bowl of fruit right where he can reach it, and has permission to help himself to an apple any time he feels like having a snack.
Best of luck to you, and good for you on taking the high road and giving your children what they NEED instead of what they WANT....

Sweets are terrible on the teeth. Too much sugar is a bad thing. Also, when a kid gets lots of sweets they usually don't want anything else. So, they're not getting a very balanced diet. In our house I have very little in the way of sweets available. If my kids want snacks their options are all very healthy. But now and then we let them pick out some candy or I'll bake cookies. Moderation is the key.

sweets cause tooth decay for one thing, sugar also turns to fat in the system, so you decide upon what this does to a child's health. You cut back by only buying things that are nutritious, such as fruits and vegetables and offering them. You don't purchase the junk. If you are the parent it is YOUR job to purchase the right foods for the child.

Insted of sweets, give your child cut up fruits. That is what i snack on when i want some candy or something. It works for my kids too. Just keep cut up fruit in the fridge. It doesn't take long and its a great snack for baby and mom too.

The worse thing I think about sweets is that it sets their whole life for eating sweets, if they're raised that way they'll always eat that way. It's hard to change once you've made the wrong eating habits, and the parents are the teachers of eating habits.

I would say the sugar intake could lead to weight and health problems down the road, soda included. Damage, I don't know; but more so weight issues.
You can cut back by simply cutting back =)

Damage: Teaches poor eating habits and refined sugar is linked to many health problems.
How do you cut back? Don't buy them. Offer healthy snacks like apple slices with peanut butter dip, other fruits, carrot sticks, nuts etc.
