I don't know what it's called (let me know if you do) but originally keyboards were laid out in a way that would let you type faster, however the mechanisms of a keyboard would get screwed up by people that typed too fast.
What is this called, how do you learn how to type this way, and how do you reconfigure your keyboard so that it is laid out this way???

I found the answer to my own question. It's called the Dvorak keyboard (instead of the Qwerty keyboard).
With most operating systems you can change back and forth with just a keystroke or two. It drastically reduces the distance that your fingers have to travel. Here's one of many links:
