Make the liquid first:
*add a pint of water to a saucepan with a teaspoon of sugar and a couple of slivers of lemon rind (a vegetable peeler is the best way to get a thin sliver off).
*Bring to the boil then remove from the heat and allow to cool.
*Transfer into serving bowl.
Use whatever fruit you like but I generally add
*1 orange (prepare by cutting peel off to remove pith and cut down into the segments to make sure there is no skin left on them).
*1 red and 1 green apple - cored, but not peeled and cut into chunks. Squeeze lemon juice on these first to stop them going black.
*1 pear - peeled, cored and cut into chunks
*Handful of green and red/black grapes - cut in two and any seeds removed.
*1 kiwi fruit - peeled and sliced
*1 banana - peel and slice this into the salad before serving to stop it going black and mushy.
Serve with fresh cream - lovely !

LOL. Avoid the lemon juice! Unless you want a sour salad! First, you'll want to use fresh fruits always, when preparing to make your fruit salad. Dont over do it, choose like 3 or 4 fruits. Sliced green apple, pineapple (or not, if you dont like it), bannana, and like a sliced musk melon would be nice. Add in some whipped cream and mix together, or just drop a bit on the top of your fruit salad. If your making a large bowl, some purple grapes would be nice. If it's for kids, add in some of those little colored marshmellows..they mix in good with the whipped cream! Hope that gives you some ideas!

The best fruit salad:
slice up bananas (use slightly green ones, They'll taste best)
slice grapes
peel and slice ripe peaches
peel and cube pineapple
core and chop green or red apples (peeling is optional)
cube up any other fruit you'd like.
Toss with about 1/8th cup lemon juice. (to prevent browning)
Just before serving, toss with a pint or so yogurt - plain, vanilla, or pineapple. Pina colada flavor is also good.
Fold in nuts, if wished.

the best fruit salad my sister makes is not to be eaten daily, but it is soooo good for the holidays.
Cut up whatever fruit you like. We also use canned peaches and frozen sweetened strawberries. then add " condensed milk"
Oh yeah it is sweet, but sooo good! Wish I had some now, Thanksgiving dinner is too far away

Cut up some bananas, orange slices, toasted coconut. Add some mayonnaise and/or sour cream and a little sugar. (Ambrosia)
Apples, walnuts, celery chopped. Mix in some sour cream and a little sugar and you have waldorf salad. Great for a Thanksgiving side dish.

I like to use fruit that doesn't brown easily, like kiwi, strawberries and all other berries, grapes, pineapple, etc. If you must use apples, bananas or other fruit that browns easily, make sure you lightly coat that fruit with lemon or lime juice (the citric acid prevents browning!)

I would sort of cheat (tinned):
Bananas
Tinned Mandarins (unless the fresh oranges can be placed in boiling water and the pith removed easily)
Peaches (got to be fresh)
Apples (scrumped) or Pears if you are lucky
Kiwi Fruit (these are cheap and easy)
Blackberries (at this time of year they are free) optional
