I wouldn't try forcibly taking his bottle away. It will only make him anxious. A sippy cup is a good idea - when he uses it, praise him for 'being such a big clever boy'. My daughter used her bottle until she was about five (as well as regular cups, of course)! When she was able to make her own bottle drinks I gently suggested she was probably old enough to give it up for ever :-)

take it away and get rid of all the bottles...give him a sippy cup...it will only be a short time and he will forget it....make sure he has enough snacks to eat...and it is best if he does not get around anyone else that still has a bottle...some people have quit giving the bottle during the day and gave the baby one bottle at night, then gradually take it away...i got tired of my son throwing his bottle out the window and just made him do without and it broke him from the bottle...choose whatever way you think is best for you....

Throw it outside and put dirt on it and later take him to see it, and tell him it is all dirty and the dogs were drinking from it, and show him that you are picking it up and throwing it away in the garbage. Then give him his milk in a cup, he will cry and complain but remind him that you had to throw the bottle, in a few days he will forget about the bottle.

Dispose of them. If he's thirsty, he will have to drink from a cup. It's that simple. Even by the age of 3, he could have some jaw and tooth problems from sucking on a bottle so long.

Give it to the garbage man, in front of him and he will know it is gone for good. First ,sit down and tell him you are going to do this and show him the brand new sippy cups you bought him because he's such a big boy.

We had our son throw it in the bin himself so he knew it was definantly gone and he knew where. When the garbo came we took him out to watch the bin get emptied. This worked well but not all kids are the same. Just be patient and persevere.
