hi tina, first of all theres no need to keep her of school,my daughter always had nits, every night i wash her hair, smother it with conditioner, comb through with a wide tooth comb, first. then go through with a nit comb,do this everynight, then rince conditioner out, section the hair in half, put a bobble on one section, then start to section otherside, you may need lots of bobbles, you need to go through every section of hair thats left, spend about an hr each night going through the hair,it takes lots of time & patiance, but you will see a big difference if you stick at it,dont bother buy nit lotions, the nits get used to them,iv been doing my daughters hair everynight for about 3weeks,now she's totally clear, even though she's clear i still spend everynight for 1/2 hr going through it,its worth it you'll see.make sure she has her hair tied up for school,if she has long hair put it in a bun, short hair just go through it when she's home, good luck hope this has helped

Tina i know exactly where you`re coming from , my daughter who is at high school is always getting them and its true lots of parents mustn`t take the time to check their kids heads !! I get so angry at that as the school has stopped the `nit nurse` and can`t do nothing regarding informing parents of an infestation in whatever classroom . I have spent an absolute forutne on shampoos & treatments but what i use now is the nitty gritty comb , search on google for it , there is a designated website for this . No need for special chemicals /treatments the comb itself is serrated and drags the eggs out from each strand of hair ! Well worth the tenner !
Other than that , keep hair tied back etc , maybe its a close friend thats infected , i know which of my daughters friend has them so no sleepovers etc and hair always back , no sharing brushes , bobblers .
Good luck , its never ending i know ...

This makes me angry too! Go to the headteacher and tell him/her. Some parents are so lazy and leave their poor kids hair infested. I have started using a nit comb with loads of conditioner when I wash my child's hair and then go through it again when it's washed out. I also have an electronic nit comb which is good but doesn't always get the eggs. Don't use a metal comb because they are useless. Just the white plastic nit comb. Good luck in your battle, which is what it really is when the kids keep getting them again and again! To the comment about lice not hurting, they don't but the treatments and the combs do!! By the way, don't bother with the 20 minute treatments, use the ones you leave on all night, they are much better!

forget about spending money on potions and lotions, they only kill the nits not the eggs, you will find that the eggs are resistant, just use conditioner on the hair and use a special fine nit comb, and until the scalp is nit free for a week continue to do so , as for other parents , forget it and the schools arent interested either, bring back the nit nurse!

Cant help you there but I can give you a cheap, easy and also the most effective way to get rid of them it's Vaseline. Coat your childs hair in Vaseline and leave it there for at least a couple of days (this is best done in holidays or weekends) and then wash out. It works because it suffocates the lice and as the eggs hatch it suffocates them to, also it wont harm your child and smells alot nicer then the shampoo. Afterwards make sure you take a nit comb to your childs hair daily to prevent anymore infections.

It is really disgusting that some parents do not care for their children. Unfortunately legislation stops headteachers contacting the parents who are to blame.
The return of health visitors to the schools would be the best thing the old "Nit Nurse" but it is up to parents to insist that their local health boards reinstate this service.

I found using mayonas really helps to get rid of nits . Put a thick coat of mayo on her head covering it all and put a plastic sack on her head (around her hair and tie it up and leave it on for 10-15 minutes take it off and wash hair with shampoo. Comb out with a nit comb It seems to work for my boys

Make a big issue about it, call the local paper up and report it. As soon as the school sees it's getting bad press they should react. The problem is that it won't go away until all the children who cause it have been treated!! The final act is trying to get the parents to react!

wow thats horrible!
I never had nits or friends with nits when i was a kid. Are Kids gettign dirtier now?
anyway maybe you should contact your local public health board? Im sure that they could suggest something. What should really be happening is that when kids come get checked at school if they test positive for the nits they should be sent home and not allowed back until they can prove they are nit free. they should have to get inspected before coming back its not fare to the clean kids or kids with parents who are trying to keep their kids nit free.
I feel like Im talking about dogs with fleas lol

It is sad that your child's school will not do anything, or the parents of other children.
A tip for your child, if you are not already doing it: tie or plait her hair, the less loose hair, the less chance to catch hairlice. Also you have to treat everything and everyone at home, wash pillows in hot water, etc.
