The term Meditation describes a variety of practices with a variety of goals. It usually involves turning our attention inward to the mind itself. Meditation is often recognized as a component of Eastern religions, originating in Vedic Hinduism. It has also become more mainstream in Western culture. It encompasses any of a wide variety of spiritual practices which emphasize mental activity or quiescence. Meditation can also be used for personal development, such as the exercises of Hatha yoga. Many practice meditation in order to achieve eternal peace, while others do it in order to become healthier and friendlier.

Boy, lots of different answers. There is a lot of difference in the views of people.
So, here's my view.
There are different types of meditation. Some types are for relieving stress or tension and some are more concerned with physical health and postures but the main goal of all of it is enlightenment.
Yes, people start on this with regards to their problems or maybe releiving stress or increase their energy levels but soon find that there is a deeper level. A level which is deeper than the eyes can see and thus your journey on the pathless path begins which would take you to a state of peace and tranquility which you have not experienced before.
you would not know that you are travelling on this path until you have gone very far.
You will keep practicing techniques and methods till you realize that no technique is required.
You will keep practicing till you see that no practice is required and you in the end you will find , that what you have found has always been there.
Yes, This sounds like a lot of mumbo jumbo but it is not. Only the mind cant get it.
You will find it when you realize that there is no you to find it and there is no one who meditates.
Wow!! What a paradox it is.
The pathless path which takes you through the gateless gate guarded by desire and fear.

The normal experience of life is through (perception) sense organs. When this perception level deepens, to ultimately see everything around as a part of self, then it is the ultimate in meditation, and enlightenment.

Enlightenment is nothing but reaching a stage of mental imbalance. it is equal to taking drugs and alcohol. you will became insensitive of the REALITY.
Meditation is a tool to ESCAPE from reality.
Both methods will take us to meaninglessness of life.
Search for something which can reveal you the purpose of your existence.

The word extreme indicates the dead end, in meditation there is no extreme as such. If and when it is done properly, one reach tranquility and peace of mind which is more related to be experienced. Enlightment is knowing and realising the truth about self and God!

extremes of meditation would be in that stage when no thought will come to your mind you will feel that you are weightless you will have lot of mind energy that moment through which what can be done i do not know.this stage is also known as zero thought point. it is very difficult to achieve but not impossible. enlightenment means you know the reality of everything like life , death, nature, everything..............

I have tried meditation with Sri Vasudeva of the Blue Star Yoga Ashram. He is from Trinidad but now has Centers all over the world. During meditation, we dim the lights to make it easier on the eyes. We usually chant the Maha Mantra before (Hare Krishna, Hare Rama), then for the actual meditation, he plays soft soothing music in the background. We close our eyes, sit with our backs straight and ensure that we are comfortable. We concentrate on the body first, going from the face down to the feet; we think about each part of the body and relax them one at a time. We think about our internal organs and how hard they work to keep us alive. We think about the billions of living cells in our body and that the body is God’s gift to us. We send love to our body and can concentrate on a spot where there might be illness and think of it with love. Love sends healing energy to the body. Then, we concentrate on the breathing, we breathe in and out slowly, if thoughts try to enter the mind, we concentrate on the breath. We breathe in peace and breathe out our stress and worries. With each inhalation and exhalation, we chant a short mantra in our minds. It can be anything that brings you close to God e.g. – Om Namah Shivaya, I love you Allah, I love you Jesus, I love you God. We concentrate on the spirit within, our real self which is a spark of Divinity, a part of God. I don’t know if you heard about the chakras. Chakras are seven spiritual centers of energy along the spine, the lowest at the base of the spine and the highest at the top of the head. At the base of the spine is Kundalini energy which is present in everyone. When the energy is dormant, it lies coiled at the base of the spine. When it is awakened, it travels up the spine, to the higher chakras, thus allowing for greater levels of spiritual awakening. This energy is represented by Lord Shiva’s cobra because it lies coiled when dormant and travels upward when awakened. The Kundalini is representative of Shakti or the feminine aspect of God. The highest chakra, at the top of the head is representative of Shiva or consciousness, the male aspect of God. Our main goal in life is to merge this Shakti with Shiva. This is what is known as enlightenment. However, in meditation, the highest the energy travels within most people is to the chakra between the eyebrows. This is the second highest chakra. With most people, the energy travels from the lowest chakra to the chakra between the eyebrows and can go back down. When the energy goes to the highest chakra it never comes back down. Such people attain enlightenment while living on earth. Most of us attain it after death. Such people are blessed souls, such as saints. Sri Vasudeva has also experienced this. He says that when this happens, one lives in total joy and peace. He is always in thoughts of God. It is important to keep the back straight during meditation as this aids the Kundalini energy to travel upwards. Some people when their Kundalini has never been aroused and is suddenly awakened can sometimes find their bodies moving back and forth during meditation. In extreme cases, people start to vibrate and jump around, you know like sometimes when you see Devi worshippers getting the “Shakti”. (This is very rare though) Coming down to the end of the meditation, we use the love that we have experienced and share it with everyone in the room and then spread this love to the world around us. We thank God for his Grace. All I have told you is not from my limited knowledge but from Guruji, Sri Vasudeva. If you want you can email him at the center in Trinidad; however he travels a lot to spread his message. Someone else at the Center can reply or you can request that Sri Vasudeva himself email you. Their email is bluestar@tstt.net.tt and their website is www.blue-star.org
