I will only talk from experience,, my father in law has been depressed all his life and was very hard to get along with becuase of his negitivity ( he's 68) finally we talked him into seeing a theraphist and getting on a anti depressant,, and he changed like 75% he still has days where he's down on himself and the world is going to hell, but for the most part he can now see hope and be happy to be where he is.
so yes it helped for us.

It depends on whether or not you think it's worth the risk of the side effects. All are different, though, some are related within the same group such as (SSRI's-Paxil,Prozac,Lexapro or TCA-s such as Elavil,Nortriptyline or they might be in a different classification such as the seretonin, norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors such as Effexor, Cymbalta.
Dosages with vary with the elderly because metabolism is different when we are older, thus requiring a different dosing requirements.
You must take a look at what particular problem you are having and if it's something that has been affecting your normal way of life, then I would consult with a professional such as a psychiatrist or psychologist. You must see either your family doctor or a specialist such a psychiatrist if you need medicine because a therapist or psychologist cannot prescribe medication.
Best of luck to you.

For some people Yes...you can have a chemical imbalance which is causing depression.
For others, anti depressants help them through a rough spot until they are ready to deal with issues.
So Yes I think Anti depressants are necessary

You can ask any nursing home, and they will tell you that it does help. When you are older, you get depressed because you are not the person you used to be, etc. Many people you used to know are either dead or you do not see them as they too are sick and older. It just puts them in a better frame of mind and can handle their situation better. My mother took something, and I did go to nursing homes, and although it was very sad, they just want someone to come and see them, so maybe only one will come, but that is all. It is good to help them be in a better frame of mind. PLEASE GO AND VISIT WITH YOUR LOVED ONES THAT ARE OLDER, IT IS JUST SO SAD.

Taking any kind of drugs is harmful.....it always has a side effect. The best thing is that you can go for Yoga, Meditation, listen to soft and your fav music, spend some time with the person whom u like and enjoy the company. try to keep urself busy.....
