I was practically raised by nuns, and kept my hair covered most of the time. It was considered vanity to flaunt the hair. It became a habit and I still have it braided or covered most of the time. I am an Atheist now, but when I used to go to Mass I kept it covered.

They do it because the Bible says women should cover their heads. It was common practice for all Christian women until the past couple centuries. There are Protestant sects such as the Mennonites which still require that women cover their heads. Others require only that women wear a headcovering while they are actually in church. I don't know of any Christian groups that require the entire head of hair be hidden but I'm sure they exist. Orthodox Jewish women will never show their real hair.
I think Christians should use their interpretation of other biblical issues to guide them. If you follow the other rules that Paul sets out, you should follow this one as well. If you feel that the passage is simply advice for that time and culture, then you can go without a covering.

I don't know why nuns do it. I am not a nun, but I do cover my hair when I engage in any worship that involves more than me. That means when I go to church, when I go to a Bible study, when my family has a study, or when I am discussing the Bible with my husband or a friend. I do it because of 1 Cor. 11:2-16.

Nuns used to adopt the dress of Mary, Jesus' mother. In the time of Christ's life, women covered their hair. It also is done for modesty, the styling of hair used to be considered vanity, which was not acceptable, nuns were to spend their time in God's service, not standing in front of a mirror.
Christian women did used to cover their hair, in the Catholic church, most recently. A lace prayer cap for girls, [it was a round circle of lace cut in a circle, usually with ribbons or a bow on it],a lace mantilla for women. Some Christian religions still wear a hair cover in church, and little Catholic girls wear something for their first communion. Older people are more likely to wear hair covers than younger. A hundred years ago, [really just 40] during a class trip, we were going to visit the Old Cathedral in St. Louis. We were instructed to bring a scarf to cover our hair, so we could visit inside, to my knowledge, none of the girls were Catholic.

Because first and foremost, the rule is based on the Scriptures and is a miust for the order that they belong to.
Apart from the commandment, probably they feel that they are for God only, should neither be attracted by the outside world nor the outside world be attracted by them.
Perhaps they also feel glorified
I wish a nun answered this question.
About the second part of the question, my reaction is - most certainly not. A person needs to follow the social code of the society in which he/she lives. Why on earth must anyone go on following an outdated religious code when these codes have failed to adopt to the changes in the society and social thinkng?

"masking the hair is a non secular commandment for Christian women", and, yet, the passage you quoted does not say that everywhere. in actuality, in case you study the full Bible, you will discover that it does not say that everywhere in it. It says that a female ought to disguise her HEAD, no longer her HAIR. And, her hair covers her head. have you ever questioned why Catholic nuns now no longer positioned on the conduct of previous consequently now no longer masking their hair? it could look which you ought to make Christian women do issues that they don't seem to be required to do. So, this is the question this is precious to ask your self: "Why do i think of that i'm God?"

Think about this - 3 of today's major religions sprang from the middle-east: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In all three cases there is some tradition of covering the hair. Orthodox Jewish women cover their hair (although in the US they do it with wigs, which in my opionion is a cheat), Catholic nuns cover their hair, and of course almost all Muslim women cover their hair.
I believe this probably sprang from a tradition of covering the hair just because they were living in an arid desert and if you did not cover your head in the day time, you could die of heat stroke. Combine this with the belief that men cannot control their passions if they see a woman uncovered and you can see where the tradition of a woman needing to be covered in public comes from. I believe this is probably where the Catholic tradition of nuns most likely stems from as well.

Yes all Christian women should cover their head. There is more pressure and force in the bible for women to cover their hair/head than there is in the Qur'an, which does not actually mention the hijab in concern to women's dressing and in many peoples opinion only tells them to cover thier bosoms/chests (regardless of whether you believe this it is still a choice in Islam). But in Christianity it is not a choice at all for in 1Corinthinians 11:3-6 it says "If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off, and it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head".

According to 1st Corinthians, chapter 11, verses 3-10, yes they should. Here is an excerpt:
But every woman praying or prophesying with her head uncovered disgraces her head (husband), for it is the same as if she were shaven. For if a woman is not covered, let her be shaven.

they accually dont anymore. they used to because of their devotion to god. to show your hair for a nun was like a vanity thing or something. your married to the lord and the Catholic Church...theres no need to be beutiful on the out side...show your inner beuty. I feel nothing wrong with nuns wearing their habbits.
