the FBI has jurisdiction in the U.S and its territories, while the CIA works overseas. Plus the Cia is a lot more secretive than the FBI, and do alot of covert missions and work.

FBI - Federal Bureau of Investigation. This agency is technically the Federal Police, and fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government. They can be involved in local cases that are violating Federal laws.
CIA - Central Intelligence Agency. This agency gathers information for the American Government to determine courses of action to be taken in the event there would be a threat the the American population.
Now while they should work together in some instances, they are separate entities and therefore fall under the rule that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. Thus, if an international incident happens, they try to blame the other, but it is not necessarily the job of the FBI to keep track of what is happening in the world. Their main concern is to keep the citizens in the US from breaking Federal Laws.

With out going to any specifics, in general
The CIA handles anything that involves the United states directly or indirectly
speaking onfederal levels The FBI handles the pieces that were left by the CIA in other words things that are out of the hands of police officers, like a murder commited by a master mind, and a simple example of the job of the CIA is gathering info's from the socialists as to what they are doing, or things connected with assasinations...etc...

Both agencies investigate crimes and seek action to prevent them. I think FBI deals with internal problems while CIA deals with international problems. There are a lot of overlapping responsibilities and hence the need for good cooperation.
