For instance, should rapists have the word rapist tattooed to their forehead, or murderer, or drug dealer, or paedophile. Should they not carry the knowledge that the world can see their crimes?

Re: Red Beret. The crime they would tattoo on my head would be monster. Not only have I been a victim but I facilitated. I allowed a man to be beaten, I just walked, ignoring it and letting him suffer. My punishment is the nightmares I get as result of my actions. But I still deserve the tattoo.

I don't think that this would help to eliminate crime. The whole point of prison is to rehabilitate people and try to make them useful members of society. If a person had their crime tattooed on their forehead, this would become impossible. All that would happen is once they were let out of prison, they would go and commit more crimes because the only people that would accept a person with such a tattoo are other criminals.

Such tattoos would also become a status symbol in the criminal world. Already in prison, prisoners use home made tattoo kits to mark themselves with such things as tears drops below their eye to represent the number of people they have murdered for example.

By permenantly marking a person with their crimes, the government would be endorsing the idea that a person can never change. One illegal act and your life is worthless to society. This would not help law abiding citizens because the criminals would band together against them presenting an even greater threat.

no,for even 1 wrongly accused to have this would be awful. perhaps if the id system takes off,it should indicate if they have been prosecuted for a crime, specifically for paedophiles. it doesn't have to state what exactly , but use some code, so that if it falls into say code 1-3 ,that the employer can have quick access from the court files to show what the crime is. this will stop paedophiles from even bothering to apply for jobs. it will definately deterr me from committing any crime as i ill literally have a mark against my name.
obviously some crimes are seen as minor, and maybe should only be reflected for a short time.

just sucking this from my thumb, not something i have spent hours paining over.

Where there is DNA evidence that has convicted a paedophile, then, yes definitely. Better still, find an uninhabited island in the UK somewhere, give them decent housing, food, medical services, selected reading material, but no TV or porn and let them live out their days without hurting anyone further.

Well in England and not long ago (1800's) theives used to be branded on the ball of the thumb on the spot as soon as sentance was announced quite barbaric. I am in favour of the death sentance to be reintroduced here (UK) but i think that the tattooing idea is not a very good one

And while the tattoo gear is out you could tattoo "Dim witted thug, fascist tendencies, likes to play with guns due to small genitalia" across the forehead of every police officer.

How about a branding iron instead? In Lancaster Castle, England, you can still see the branding iron which used to be heated and pressed onto a criminal's thumb with the letter M for Malefactor. Thus you could see if the person you were dealing with had "previous" as we say in England.

i used to work with a man who was a prisoner in san quentin for a long time. he had his own head tattooed with such things as a gun, a knife, a casket and a few others that he thought represented his crimes. he had them tattooed on his scalp so he could grow his hair over them and every so often shaved his head as a reminder and sometimes as an unspoken threat to his enemies. he seemed very proud of them, like badges of honour. he seemed really quite twisted to me.

I thought that was my idea!
Yes, I firmly believe they should. It would save a lot of money and space in jails if they recieved a good flogging and a tattoo stating their crime.
The public would be able to take better measures to protect themselves from the fiends as well.

No,I think some people who are truly truly sorry, should be able to live their life without the world judging them. Plus what if they really didn't do it, and just found out 25 years later because the DNA test was contaminated.
