Boy that is a tough question.
We all start out in the womb in a female form. some where along the development stage or souls decide which sex they need to be to fulfill their reason form entering into mortal life.
in Hermaphrodites either the wrong mix of hormones was sent into the body to make it female or male. either the soul could not make up its mind or the mother has some choice and wanted a female which conflicted with what the soul wanted resulting in a mix of both in one person. usually one sex or the other is dominant and the sex organs of the other do not develop into usefulness and are sterile.
The other theory is that they were supposed to be fraternal twins that didn't separate for some reason.
Thanks to God for giving us free will as we can either wait until the person is old enough to understand and can make up its own mind as to which sex it wants to be based on which sex is most dominate and will be able to do the reproducing.Or the parents can do the choosing with the recommendation of a doctor and consultation with their priest.

Being fruitful is mentioned many times in the Bible. I believe it was Jesus who says, "you shall know them by their fruit". Which if fruit comes from our loins, then we will only know those who have had children. I find that to be really narrowminded don't you? Also, why would Gods blessing say have babies "be fruitful" and have babies if multiply means to have babies too? Is it possible that having babies was never part of Gods plan since he made Eve to suffer pain on childbirth?

Fruitful can be in other ways also like rendering your services to the needy & multiply can be creating people's interest in these type of services so that your life has a meaning.

God was just saying that people should not refrain from having children in order to better worship Him. I wonder how Catholic priests feel about that...
