I consistently hear really bad arguments either for religion or against well-proven scientific theories/facts/laws, here and in real life religious debate. I've met lots of perfectly intelligent religious folks in my time here, and many of them are pretty well versed in science. How do you feel that the average person of your faith is not only clueless about science, but consistently tries to disprove science with poorly supported arguments or logical fallacies? For example, the single most common argument I've heard in my life has been that the Christian God exists, and this is proven by the Bible existing, and the Bible was inspired by God, so God must exist. The large majority of Christians I have talked to do not see any fallacy in this argument.

Edit: Please understand that I am not questioning anyone's faith, and it is not helpful to me for you to talk about why you do or do not believe. I'm asking about how you feel about the poor arguments people give concerning religion.

bluebootz: While I don't expect people to have a perfect understanding of everything (in fact, if this were the case, debate would be a pretty dry affair), but if someone is willing to spend a lot of time arguing a point, I expect them to be minimally informed about both sides of the argument and fairly well versed with their side of the argument.
In short, not all opinions and/or arguments are equally valid.

I wouldn't say embarrassed... Mostly sad that the other person will come away from it all thinking that all Christians are stupid.
I agree with the problem about the Bible existing and God existing circular argument. As a Catholic I believe in the Bible because the Catholic Church says that it is Holy Scripture. I believe in what the Catholic Church tells me because she has proven herself to be a trustworthy agent of God on Earth. And I believe in God, because my own experiences, research, and reason have shown Him to exist.

I'm not religious, but your question is intriguing.
My answer is that there should be no reason to be embarrassed of the answers that are given in this category. How could anyone expect to know everything? To have a full understanding of all religions and science and evolution and the Bible and to somehow word your answers correctly, would take a miracle. It's not a good idea to expect a perfect answer every time from everyone.

although u may be correct on that the average christian person has felt God, and knows God just as if He is a person sitting next to u, its very difficult to try to explain that to a person that doesn't believe or is skeptical, most christians have a personal relationship with God that can't really be put into words, and can only happen when u have faith in Him and His word. The bible is a life line for christians, and knows its inspired by Him, its not just a belief it is a fact , and if u are a christian then u know what i mean, if your not then u don't

I tend to agree with them; bec i cannot imagine humans and animals and whatever nature has just happens to be there in the first place. So, call me embarrasing or whatever. But yes, I believe there is a God up there somewhere who made all of us and lets us exists and lets us be where we are for a purpose. Maybe u have a different point of view and are more inclined toward more scientific facts and theories; and I respect that intelliegence of yours. Our understanding and intelligence are all at different levels and maybe urs is much better than any one of us here. But yes, I stick to my belief that there is a God who continues to change times and seasons, who sets up kings and deposes them, who gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

These cristians say the bibel is perfect truth..the word of God. Then when you quote the hundred of so passages that are crazy, or scientifically incorrect, or contradictory, they get mad. What good is a book with this many errors? 5 billion people alive today have no use for the bibel. On the one hand, the crisitains quote the bibel like a parrot, but suddenly want a "liberal" interpretation when it suits them. Now, I have NO respect for the "religious brethren," as you call them.

It's also true for atheists - I'm often bothered by some of the thoughtless smattering of religion that goes on here - how is anyone supposed to learn about or come to respect anyone else through brainless insults? I'm afraid this site doesn't often show the best of what either side has to offer!

i was particularly embarrassed by a document i read a couple of years ago called the pink peril (or something like that), arguing (supposedly on behalf of all Christians) that gay people have the potential to destroy society. it was so hateful and prejudiced, they basically portrayed all gay people as child molesters and sexual predators, and their argument was totally fallacious. it embarrassed me that these people were speaking on behalf of all christians - it's things like this that give christians a bad name. i don't share their views and resent the fact that they make it seem like all christians do.

I'm never embarrassed by my faith. Ever. And my brethren are the most enlightened and educated, the most knowledgeable, from all backgrounds, as well as the kindest and most conscientious citizens. My kindred include many of our founding fathers, our most famous scientists, great rulers of the past, authors, musicians, artists, doctors etc - Take a guess.

Nick Chiranand,
Yeah, I get the same thing from Atheists and Evolutionists. They say that there is scientific fact ofor Evolution, and there's not. In fact, the real scientists know that there is not. So the same arguement applies here.
There are those that know, and there are those that only think they know.
