That is a very, very in depth question that can't really be answered in the little amount of space there is on Answers. For the best information, I recommend going to http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/vehicle/index.html. There is a ton of information ranging from simple short explanations to the technical manuals for the Shuttles.

The first rockets used gun powder. For war fare. Then pure alcohol. Then,Liquid Hydrogen and Liquid Oxygen. Other compunds were developed and anything combustible will work. But, anything non-combustible under ultrahigh pressure will also work. Conventional rockets and space shuttles are dangerous. Bcause, they rely on combustion for lift. This also releases a lot of heat-energy. Not good for global warming.

Just a big truck that can carry cargo to the ISS (where it is now) and/or be a platform for close space scientific experiments. It's programs will end by 2010 and the new space ship will come on line. It will have the ability of again going to the moon.

Space shuttles are aircrafts with rockets attached to them. It has to work against gravitational power to get into orbit, once in the orbit it keeps revolving in the axis since there is no gravity existing. similarly to come back it has to reenter into the earth by exerting enough pressure against the gravity. The pressure is exerted usually with the burning of the rockets which give out lot of energy.

It works just like an airplane except that
1. It has rockets for propulsion.
2.On the way back it glides and lands.
3.Speeds are much higher compared to an airplane.
4.It has a pay load which is carried on its piggy back unlike an airplane.
5. otherwise it has all other systems just like an airplane.
