Never heard this saying before, not really sure what it's suppose to imply. To analyze it, my opinion of japanese is that they are very smart, not really sure how the rest of the world views them. And beavers are hard workers. So japanese beavers would be intellegent hard workers? Seems like it wouldn't be a bad thing, they aren't comparing japanese to beavers. I really dont' know, it's a very odd saying IMO.

I don't know about 'derogatory' per se, but it IS kind of stupid because they don't have beavers in Japan.
Also, many Japanese people are fat, lazy, and have no work ethic...just like Americans.

Certain animals somehow sounds ok, like beavers, dolphins and owls. Other animals like dogs, pigs or monkeys doesn't sound good. It's not fair to the animals lol.

Watashi wa yume wo kanaeru tame kenmei ni hataraite imasu. 私は夢をかなえるため、懸命に働いています。 It could be more natural and flexible translation of your original purpose in the text.
