"Hilarious" smart arsed comments aside, Port Douglas is a pretty good base for getting to the reef.

Most of the coastal towns in that area have tour services based in the towns where you can buy trips out to the reef. Many of these are suitable for families with slightly older children.

The typical tour that is offered by most of these providers basically involves the boat trip out to the reef, and they often stop at large pontoons in the sea above the reef, where you can sunbake and snorkell from the edge. Lunch is most often provided. After a couple of hours on the pontoon they will take you back to the shore.

These trips are suitable for kids who have some water skills, and can swim fairly well. The water in these places is most often very calm, and free of rips and large waves, however, you will still need to supervise your kids closely. Remember, the water is still very deep (up to 10m and sometimes deeper), and this can be concerning for some children when snorkelling.

The good news is, some of these pontoons have underwater observatories in them, which means you can see the reef without getting wet.

Push them into the reef, take pics and it will be a trip the whole family will remember.
