Learn by yourself.
Practise very hard to prove that you can play more than a few songs.

Find a Good Teacher that will teach you the songs you want to know and...
1. How to sight read
2. How to play to a click track (metronome)
If you can do either of those you will be a good musician and if you ever want to do a studio recording the engineer will love you and be really nice to you!

Well, for starters, you need a new teacher.

Once you have a knew teacher you can start to learn more complex things. And practise is the only way to emprove, theres no easy way out. But its all worth it in the end.

Just practice a lot. I didn't think I could become a good guitarist, until I practiced a lot and now people look up to me and want to know how I create such a cool new style. It really pays off to just have it be your main focus, do it whenever you have spare time. Hope this helped.

I think maybe that if you buy a book and teach yourself you'd be able to play more songs. Or, try to learn off of another friend of yours.

Too many students want to learn their favorite song instead of the basics of musicianship. If you think you are ready to move along, discuss it with another instructor.
