Start with a checklists of worst case scenarios possible> This is a good strategy that may be useful in case of data loss or viruses, etc!

A backup software installed on your machine! It will store many types of data (pics, programs, documents....etc.). In case your computer crashes or gets a virus, then you do not need to pay all the costs to recover your data.

You need to do: periodic backups, make more than one copy of backup, but remember that you need to pick the right backup media for your needs. You can use CDs, DVD-R, hard drives, and flash drives. Remember to pick right tool for the job. Remember, when you have backups that you keep your them in a safe place away from environmental hazards and abusers. Also check on the backup completion process before you finish.

I hope that helped ;-)

To backup the registry, go to start -->run--> regedit
Open registry and use file -->export command. It will place a icon on your desktop if that's the location you would like.

I really like to use USB drives - it's convenient, cheap, easy and can store a ton of data. CDs only will store 650MB of data while the USB drives that are available today are in the GBs. You should backup your important data such as documents, excel files, pictures, quicken or money programs. Some people choose to backup the whole C drive, but it's redundant simple because if it crashes, you've backed up the problem with it.
Hope this helps.

in windows you can go to programs>accessories>system tools>backup and use an external hard-drive to do a complete system backup. Just be sure- to check the "system state" check box. Do this weekly or so. When you have a catostrophic system drive failure you can buy a new drive, load your base copy of windows and the most recent patches and then do a full system restore. this isnt the "best" or quickest way, but it's free and easy to use.

first of all you should decide what you want to backup. becides things you've mentioned you can image the whole system, in order when it's down you can easily restore. the best sollution would be true image from acronis, with it's help you can easily backup all you want and store it directly to cd/dvd. to my mind it's the best backup sollution for now. you can read more on their site and i recomen you to read the comparison of true image and norton ghost just to understand what for peaple need backups.
