Drugs are the first choice for the following reasons:
1. They have proven efficacy
2. Faster onset of action
3. Cost effective and less time consuming.

Insecurity with obsession and depression is a very dangerous condition. If you don't treat you might kill someone or harm yourself badly. I faced this situation 7 years ago. The Psychiatrist gave me Fluoxetine (Prozac) 20mg. I felt better after 6 weeks and within in 6 months I became the happiest man on the earth!.
I was lucky because the first drug worked for me. Some need many trials to find the suitable one. You will feel worse in the first 3 weeks of treatment. But these side effects will disappear after 3 weeks, while your body adapts to the drug.
Start with a drug from SSRI group. They are
(Trade names in parentheses)

citalopram (Celexa, Cipramil, Emocal, Sepram)
escitalopram oxalate (Lexapro, Cipralex, Esertia)
fluoxetine (Prozac, Fontex, Seromex, Seronil, Sarafem, Fluctin (EUR))
fluvoxamine maleate (Luvox, Faverin)
paroxetine (Paxil, Seroxat, Aropax, Deroxat)
sertraline (Zoloft, Lustral, Serlain)
dapoxetine (no known trade name)
All these drugs are equally effective but you may start from Paroxetine or Sertaline because they have wide range FDA approved indications.
Some guys get problems like Sexual dysfunction or weight gain after a long term use. (In may case it happened only after 5 - 6 years). You can treat these problems with sildenafil or other drugs or switch to other medications like Bupropion XL or Mirtazapine as they have few sexual side effects. Mirtazapine cause weight gain and Bupropion may cause dose dependent hypertension.
You have to continue treatment if your benefits from the drug outweigh side effects.

are you diagnosed with depression or do you judge that yourself or with the help of someone. You see a doctor first then a psychiatrist to determine the correct illness then the correct treatment. Sometimes pills can take a considerable long time without effect because they are part of the treatment not the whole treatment.

Anti-depressants made me realise that being just plain depressed was better than being depressed and on anti-depressants. The other guy says it worked for him great! But, they certainly don't work for everyone.

when are drugs ever the answer?
you must know the answer to your question already. no one would ask that, unless they just want attention. someone who comes to a public forum like this, and ask such a question, is just asking for people to give him/her a little attention. sick, you need help!
