Well, lying down can definelty increase your incidence of acid reflux (heartburn) after eating. Sleeping increases blood flow to the stomach area, but I don't know how that exactly effect digestion...may speed it up for you?!

Sleeping is not the bad part, it is the eating part that really causes problems and affects your body, it takes the stomach about 6 to 8 hrs to digest and for food to dissolve in the system and process it, so when you go to sleep, this slows down the whole process and your veins and even blood circulation become more difficult, as it also affects oxygen, therefore sometimes people have nightmares, it is a reflection of the body not doing well, while everything is trying to become filtered and restored, you add heavy food, it's much work for the body at night, and you basically store practically everything from that meal.

If you lay down awake, but still eat, your body obviously is still inactive and this causes it to gain weight, because it's doing nothing and nothing is going anywhere, but being stuck in your stomach.

If you truly want an answer, all that you ask is, "bad". for you. Eating before going to bed, laying down and eating, whether it is on a boat with a goat, on a chair with a coat. In reality, all this eating has to stop at 6pm or the sooner the better so that your body has a chance to start working on the food. You know, so that you don't get fat and lazy and have bad dreams!

The problem with eating then going to sleep is the problem with weight gain. That is the easyest way to gain weight. If you eat and then go to bed your at your lowest active point and your body has no way of burning the calories. Plus laying down right after you eat can cause other health issues like heart burn acid reflux.

When you sleep your body slows down and doesn't burn as many calories. That is why you shouldn't sleep after you eat. But being inactive, as in laying around and not doing anything does the same thing.

It is a bad idea because when you sleep your body shuts down to conserve energy. This lowers your metabolism. When you eat and you are awake you are still moving around, thinking and your body is running at full force so you are better able to burn some of those calories. Atnight the food digests much slower and non is burned off because you don't need it so all is stored.

Eating and then going to bed immediately is bad due to the fact that when your body enters REM sleep, your heart rate slows down...then your metabolic rate slows down and your body is not able to burn off the calories that you just consumed.

You should try to not eat anything for at least 1-2 hours before you plan on going to bed.
