I can't speak for all men. My brother in law is a special forces dude and he can't stand football. I think it goes beyond being competitive. I enjoy it because it's actually like chess with moving pieces. The strategy of one coach calling one play and the other coach trying to guess what they are going to call, along with the execution of each play is very exciting for me because you never know what's going to happen next.
Then you find out the offense coordinator for one team USED to be the O.C. for the opposite team so now the opposite team's defensive coordinator and coach have to brainstorm to come up with and practice new plays. I love football because it involves a lot of skill, strategy, psychology, and it has an element of unpredictability. To the untrained eye it seems like a bunch of dudes just carrying a leather ball and trying to get from one end to the other, when in in reality it's so much more complicated than that. I've gotten more than one gf into football by inviting them over to watch it with me. I never pushed it on them and instead would wait for them to ask just ONE question.
If they showed interest I would start explaining the rules to them. Then they would want to know why the yellow flag was thrown and then I would explain more. Then during the halftime they would profile one or more of the players and talk about how one of their sons had autism and how he did a lot of charity work, etc. then she got to see the drama and human stuff that goes on behind the scenes. And before I knew it I had welcomed another female NFL fan to the club.
In fact, I had a fairly recent convert during the superbowl this year. Now she wants to kick it with me every Sunday....but alas my social calendar is full. She'll have to wait a few weeks.
Don't get me started on bettting on the games and playing in Fantasy League.....

Because its an expression of male aggression, dominance, and masculinity. I have played football and I can tell you hat there is a reason girls don't play the game (well sure tomboys but in general) It's very rough and every 40 seconds you go out there and basically start smashing into someone. It's very adreniline pumping

Because football plays on the cro magnon in all of us. Give us red meat and a testosterone flow! We enjoy football as well as other sports because we like the competition as well as the entertainment value.
Besides, women like the soaps and shopping. We don't complain as long as it is your money you are spending. LOL

Because football is a tough manly sport that releases testorsterone and builds teamwork and friendships. It is an entertaining sport and men like to watch it rather than competing with other people.

It is a testosterone thing. Men by nature are the hunters and warriers. They have agression that needs to be channeled in the right direction because no longer do we send our men out to hunt or to war. They need a way to work out their grunt factor.
Thus, football is their war, their hunting.

you should have said "sports" cause football is great and all, but baseball and basketball are better. Why do women like to shop, or gossip, or whatever most women like doing...cause you like doing it. Men are mostly competitive. Sports of very competitive. So, guys like sports.
