Effexor is in a class of medicines called serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).
Effexor is used to treat depression.
Effexor XR is used to treat:
Depression
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
Social anxiety disorder (SAD)
Who it is for: Adults with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder or social anxiety disorder.
Benefits: May eliminate nearly all depression symptoms.
Common side effects: Constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, sexual side effects, sleepiness, sweating and weakness. Effexor can make some conditions worse. Tell your doctor if you have suicidal thoughts or symptoms of mania. A range of side effects can occur with discontinuation use of the drug.
Interactions: People taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors should not take Effexor because of serious side effects that have been reported.
