Read to them...simple but highly effective. Studies have shown that biblio-centered parenting leads to success in schools. Plus, make learning fun...and turn everyday experiences into opportunities to learn...more will arise the older they get. For now at their age...ask/tell them colors/numbers/names of foods you pick up, etc. Also, talk to them/interact...don't just sit them in front of the TV...let them ask questions and try not to get irritated by repetive questions. Encourage an inquisitive nature and you will have a life-time learner. That is a great question and it is good to see that you care to set your kid up for success! Kudos!

I liked using the leapfrog learning toys and books with my kids. They were definitly ahead of the game with a lot of kids thier ages. Also, talking to them like adults instead of using baby talk and reading to them often does wonders. Don't try teaching them other languages until they get english down though. I made that mistake with my daughter and she got so confussed between the two that half her sentences were in english while the other was spanish. Wait until at least 3 1/2. I'll be teaching her german next. Probably when she's about 7 though. Still learning spanish.
