We don't, that's why some of us have faith.

Yes, I agree with the person below me but I still feel the need to stick up for the people who believe. Let them do what they want.

Read all the various answers to this question and you can derive only 1 true answer. It really isn't. Some of the Bible may have been inspired by the realm of spirit but much of the Bible is the opinions and words of men and that makes it just that .....the words of men not God. Besides don't you know how many times the Bible has been translated into different languages? Be real....The Bible can point to the truth but it is not the whole truth.

If you're willing to take a chance of not beleiving that it is the word of god, then go ahead. If you read the bible,in it it says that if anyone writes anything other than what I have written here,he will pay the price.I don't know,do you want to find out ?You have to look at the bigger picture.Don't beleive extremists who have come up with other stories or scientific explanations. Some of those people were inbreds. And besides, take a look around you.....God is punishing all those people who didn't believe in him,by fire, water and other ways.Do you really think you can get away with your little tiny self and not have him notice it?

The Bible, the Word of God.

someone asks "which god"? Well, the God Whose word it claims to be. The God Who created the Heavens and the Earth. The Bible starts with "In the beginning, God ...". That God.

How do I know? By Faith.

Also, internal and external evidence.

One book, yet 66 books, written over many centuries and by many human authors ... and yet a continuity unlike any other.

Also, the evidence of prophecy given and subsequently fulfilled.

specal k,
Man, you got very little as far as answers, most of them show that Christians are spending their time making life better for themselves. Oh well.

"how do you know the bible is the word of god?"
This is why I know the Bible is the word of God. Jesus is the central figure to the Christian world. He is quoted as referencing some passages from the Old Testament, and He called them "scriptures."

Since He called His death and resurrection, He became the central figure to Christianity. Because He was the Christ of it. Not only did He do miracles to those that lived during that time, He fulfilled many of the prophecies expressed in the Old Testament. So now with that, we can know that the Old Testament was referred to as scripture by the founder of Christianity.

What the New Testament does is discuss events surrounding and pertaining to Jesus, and then about the things that those that followed Him. It also talks about things that are going to happen in the future. Many of these things, are supported in the Old Testament.

Both the Old Testament and the New Testament point to Christ. But that's another subject.

"Mine is Signed" <<
Actually, as one who wants to know you are the one that has to put the 'word of god' to the test. I know I read alot of publications that put things into perspective. SO, if you are trying to get off easy and ask a question that you think can be sumed up in a paragraph or a book!.... well, it is a search. One that can be accomplished if you are really looking for the truth. If you are just trying to vindicate your already tainted views.............well, that won't work.
Do you think that the scriptures were kept around for fun? The Holy Bible as we know it (66 books, Genesis to Revelation) where protected by Almighty God. There were MANY times that ones tried to destroy them. Those times are also written about in the Bible. Have a nice read!
Oh, but if you have to point out just ONE thing about the Bible that would PROVE it to be the Word Of Almighty God.........it would be Prophecy. The Future in Advance. Yeah, that is the one!

In this case the proof is in the pudding - only the word of God has the ability to totally transform individuals and societies the way that the Bible has. If it came from any other source it would have died out long ago.

It's not.

It's easy to believe that it is, since so many others in our culture believe it.. but I really think that it takes an incredible amt of ignorance to believe that a god who looks like you, acts like you, and shares your sense of morality wrote or inspired a book.

There are a number of books like the Bible, each claiming to be the word of a god.

It is circular to give some form of the following answers to the following two questions..

how do you know that god exists?
because of the bible

well then how do you know that the bible is true?
because god says so.

FAITH does not justify belief. Faith is a dangerous epistemological invocation... called in when there is not enough evidence to substantiate your belief, but you want to be stubborn abd believe it anyway.

If you believe that the Bible is the word of God, you too are capable of flying an airplane into a skyscraper.

There are prophecies throughout the Bible that are true. One thing about God that a lot of people don't understand is that you have to have faith in something that at times can seem unreal or "made up". But I promise once you show that faith and open yourself up to the possibilities, your whole world will change... for the better.

Because the bible tells me so! LOL. Really I know that the bible is the word of God because of the words it pertains in it. For it to be written when it was, there was no way of knowing certain things. Just like in Job. How did he know that the earth itself hung upon nothing, unless it was inspired by God? How did moses know to bury feces, unless it was inspired by God? There are lots and lots of bible verses that are there for our benefit. Sex being one. You are only suppose to have one sexual partner. Look at all the diseases around because of promiscuity. Yes the bible is the inspired word of God.

because i saw a bumper sticker on a car the other day that said "God said it, I believe it, and that settles it" pretty much summed up the mentality of the driver of the car. In other words you cannot argue with fundamental christians about the validity of the bible,,,they are way too brainwashed.
