I'm 22 and my sister's nephew (he's 14) told me that his 12 yr old girlfriend cut herself about 25 times on her wrists. I feel obligated to say something and I have her name and the phone number to the school she goes to. Am I making the right decision about calling her school counselor? I don't know this girl but I really feel like I should tell someone to get her some help. Any advice would be appreciated.

He told me that she wasnt trying to kill herself but she was just trying to get him off of her mind because she thought that he was cheating on her. And no, she isn't from Idaho

Run, don't walk to get some help for this kid who is in pain. Yes, tell her school counselor and anyone dealing with teens and preteens should be up to date on these types of self-harm injuries. Here's a quick article on what it's all about:

Dont call her parents, you dont know what her personal situation is. She is suffereing from something that is making her do this. The reasons she is cutting herself could be very traumatic for her, and her parents may just be the worst people to call. What if her parents are abusing her, and I am not saying they are, because people who self mutilate do so for many reasons, but a lot of them do it because they have suffered some kind of abuse...and I just wouldnt take the risk of involving the parents right now until it is clear what her problem is. I find School counsellors are also not the best people to involve either because they may not have the experience with self mutilation. If I were you I would ring the local mental health team, if you have one, or a psychiatric institution and ask them what is the best thing to do in this case.
Its a really difficult situation if you dont know the cause of this girl cutting herself....get some professional opinions, not from people on here...its too dicey, you are risking the well being of this child if you take matters into your own hands without first finding out from a professional person what would be the best thing to do. A counsellor is not a psychiatrist. Most self harmers are referred to psychiatrists for treatment....so that would be the far better option in my opinion.
Good luck, this girl needs help, but she needs the right kind of help....please do not take anyones advice on here....Ring a professional.

You are going in the right direction. She definitely needs help. Think of how you would feel if something more drastic happened and you never said anything.
You're doing the right thing by contacting someone who could either handle the situation or contact someone else who could.

A person who will hurt themselves needs professional help. I have a family member like that. She needed to get on meds so she could think more clearly. Today she is wonderful. Thankfully we got her to a doctor in time.

Yes, you are definitely doing the right thing and helping this girl by contacting her counselor, she really sounds like she needs help very badly but is probably scared to seek it. Don't hesitate to do it.

YES, she needs help. Call the councilor, call her parents. Hopefully they will get her the help she needs before she really hurts herself...
