The best one I have found is La Fee Verte (Green Fairy). Yes the one from Moulin Rouge!!! It really does exist, but is difficult to find. There is a bit of a grey area over whether true absinthe is in fact legal or not. My advice is drop a sugar cube in it before you drink it - you can probably find an absinthe spoon somewhere for the truly professional touch. Don't always believe what others tell you either about which are the worst - it's all personal preference. Drink it in moderation though - you know what it can do!!!!!!!

Big Mac has it right there. I have drunk from an original Ricard Absinthe over 100 years old courtesy of the blokes who launched Mari Mayans Absenta into the UK 7 years ago.
These days there are several Absinthes worth investigating to find your favourite:
Sebor Absinthe (Czech Rep) - http://www.seborabsinth.com/
Mari Mayans Absenta (Ibiza) - http://www.absenta.com/
La Fee Verte (France) - http://www.lafeeabsinthe.com/
I would avoid - Hill's and Trenet Absinthe's. No real quality there, just an anisette alcohol delivery system!
La Fee provide the proper spoon for serving too.
To serve:
Prop a spoon over a small wine or pony glass (pref the absinthe spoon from la fee)
Place 1 medium white sugar cube on the spoon
Pour over 25ml of Absinthe
Light the cube of sugar and let caramelise
Pour over 25ml chilled mineral water to extinguish the flame
Wait for the glass to cool before stirring & drinking.

the best and only true absinthe liqueur was made by HL Pernod in 1797 (home made fermented wormwood which is what you get in the Chech republic is not absinthe) it was eventually banned in 1915 so the liqueur was flavoured with aniseed which is what we now call Pernod

The best absinthe stays in the bottle. It's a very harmful form of alcohol and was for many years banned in many places. It was strongly associated with prostitutes in paris, who used it as the cheapest way of distancing themselves from the sordid and risky reality of their existence. There are more pleasant ways to toxify yourself.

Didn't know it was still obtainable. However Le fee Verde (Green Fairy) is reputably the best.
