God, I hope not. I work too hard for my money to hand it over to someone for that.

I live in Australia, and if a doctor considers you unfit to hold a job because of any illness then you are allowed to get an income from Social Security. Depression is a mental illness, so dont know why you are getting the answers you are getting. If it was Bipolar, and it prevented the person from working, it would be a different outcome I am sure. Its pretty discriminatory really, if both are mental illnesses, why would one be cause for getting a social security benefit and the other is not. Depression is just as debilitating as any other mental illness...so common sense tells me, that if you are unable to work because of this illness then you should by law be able to get a benefit from the Government. Why would it take 10 years and a lawyer to get a benefit from Social Security as one answer suggested.
Medical professionals consider depression to be a mental illness, so why should social security discriminate against the name of the mental illness.
Talk to your doctor, honestly if you are not well enough to work, then you are entitled to a social security benefit, regardless what your mental illness is called...its common sense. If I am wrong, then I am wrong about mental illness in general, and I know I am not wrong about that.. Depression IS a mental illness.
Talk to your doctor, dont rely on the answers on here. If he deems you medically unfit to hold down a job, then Social Security have not got the power to go against a Doctors opinion...they are not medical professionals...they are office clerks who follow policy and procedure set down by the
Government. The Doctor is the one who knows your medical capabilities....He would have to have to last say.

SSD will not pay someone with depression because it is treatable, to qualify you have to be unable to work, phyically and mentally. I have had 12 surgerys and a muti other problems and was told I don't qualiy due to they think I can still work 1 hour a week. But we are at the point now where we don't need it so I gave up because the fight can be up to 5 years and lots of lawyers. So if you think depresion is enough good luck it is going to be a long and bumpy road.

As a person with severe depression, just got out of the mental hospital on Wednesday, and talked to most of the other patients in there, I can tell you that it is possible, but difficult...I met a few people in there for major depression that were on disability (social security) due to their illness.
And to whoever said "god I hope not, I work too hard" - you've obviously never been in "that place", and for your sake, I hope you never are.

Insecurity with obsession and depression is a very dangerous condition. If you don't treat you might kill someone or harm yourself badly. I faced this situation 7 years ago. The Psychiatrist gave me Fluoxetine (Prozac) 20mg. I felt better after 6 weeks and within in 6 months I became the happiest man on the earth!.
I was lucky because the first drug worked for me. Some need many trials to find the suitable one. You will feel worse in the first 3 weeks of treatment. But these side effects will disappear after 3 weeks, while your body adapts to the drug.
Start with a drug from SSRI group. They are
(Trade names in parentheses)
citalopram (Celexa, Cipramil, Emocal, Sepram)
escitalopram oxalate (Lexapro, Cipralex, Esertia)
fluoxetine (Prozac, Fontex, Seromex, Seronil, Sarafem, Fluctin (EUR))
fluvoxamine maleate (Luvox, Faverin)
paroxetine (Paxil, Seroxat, Aropax, Deroxat)
sertraline (Zoloft, Lustral, Serlain)
dapoxetine (no known trade name)
All these drugs are equally effective but you may start from Paroxetine or Sertaline because they have wide range FDA approved indications.
Some guys get problems like Sexual dysfunction or weight gain after a long term use. (In may case it happened only after 5 - 6 years). You can treat these problems with sildenafil or other drugs or switch to other medications like Bupropion XL or Mirtazapine as they have few sexual side effects. Mirtazapine cause weight gain and Bupropion may cause dose dependent hypertension.
You have to continue treatment if your benefits from the drug outweigh side effects.

In some countries doctors give disability certificate for OCD.

No, not depression alone...You need another mental disorder because depression is too easy to treat - they will tell you. Are you psychotic, obsessive/compulsive, anything to add to it? Then you can get it. You need two or three other problems before you get it. They always turn down the first case, usually. You have to have documentation of hospitalization to proceed. ONLY THE SICK, NEED APPLY! Insurance guy - you need to take some psychology course before you start judging others

If you really really really need SS then I hope you are able to get it. However, if you are a just lazy freeloader I hope that you will just get (or keep) a job and help me pay for the rest of the lazy freeloaders. I am an insurance agent and I see useless freeloaders EVERY day. I can tell you that SS is not easy to get and it could take years.

Posssibly. If you have a documented history of treatment. If you have ever lost a job because of it. If you can get a doctor to back you up on paper. Usually you have to be without a job for at least one year. It took me two years and 3 appeals to get it, but it was not for depression.

well I have ssi too but it is not for depression and i really doubt you can get it for that alone. you need to talk with a doctor and have prove for your depression and alot of paperwork to be able to even get ssi. it will take you a few years and i had to go through at least 2 times before i got mine.

That depends on the extent of your depression. Are you in therapy? Your Doctor/Psychologist will be the one who will help determine if you are " disabled".
